Speciality
The Iruppu waterfalls is a fresh water cascade located in Coorg at a distance of 45 kms from Virajpet on the way to Nagarahole Wildlife Sanctury. The Lakshmana Tirtha river which is a tributary of river Cauvery, pitches several times down the Brahmagiri mountain range creating this beautiful water cascade which is also known as Lakshmana Tirtha Falls. It is believed that Rama and Lakshmana were passing by this place in search of Sita. When Rama asked Lakshmana to fetch some drinking water, Lakshamana shot an arrow on to the Brahmagiri Hills and a water spring oosed out of the arrowed spot, and the source is known as Lakshmana Thirtha. The Falls is believed to possess the power to cleanse sins and is visited by thousands of devotees on Shivaratri day. A Shiva temple, the Rameshwara temple is located on the banks of the river and a footpath leads to the falls amidst forest. A wooden platform has been placed down below one of the falls to facilitate visitors to stand beneath the falls. The walk to the falls will take 10 to 15 minutes and is rough and steapy. It is advised to wear sneakers or sandals with strap.
